On Sugar

Morocco is addicted to sugar. Moroccans consume such vast quantities of sugar it defies comprehension.  It is part of the national identity. As the saying goes, all you need to get married is “Sugar and sheep.”

Toothlessness and diabetes are widespread.

"Would you like some tea with your sugar?"

  1. I visited the archaology museum in Rabat and saw sugar molds (the same shape at the modern sugar cones) that were hundreds of years old. Moroccans have a long tradition with sweet foods and drinks. I asked someone why there are so many goat-herds in rural Moroccan areas, and was told that there is a demand for goat meat for diabetics, less fat than mutton.
